Barrett encourages residents to have say on Ontario animal welfare

SIMCOE – The way Ontario animal welfare law is enforced is changing. Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett is encouraging residents to share their views on how the province can develop a system that is transparent and accountable, and above all, keeps animals safe.

Currently there aretemporary measures in place to ensure animals remain protected during the transition to an improved animal protection enforcement system. This follows an effort by the OSPCA to block the government’s efforts earlier this month to empower willing and helpful OSPCA affiliates to minimize gaps while we work towards an improved animal protection system in Ontario.

“I have spoken to farmers, animal lovers and professionals on this very important subject,” Barrett said. “Everyone seems to have a slightly different opinion on how things should be done, but everyone agrees that whatever is put in place must ensure animals are always treated with respect.”

Feedback garnered from the survey will directly inform Ontario’s new model for animal welfare.
