Simcoe — As Ontario’s Opposition continued to call on Dalton McGuinty to keep his promise to stop the Mississauga Power Plant, Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett was reminding government of the potential for generation at Nanticoke.
Barrett has sent a letter to Energy Minister Chris Bentley to follow up on June 2010 correspondence regarding the potential for Nanticoke OPG to serve as a site for natural gas energy production once proposed for Oakville.
“Today, I ask you to note the Ontario Government’s decision to cancel the natural gas plant in Mississauga as a further opportunity to relocate generation to Nanticoke,” Barrett pointed out in his letter.
Barrett went on to highlight the area’s energy production history and experience in helping to create agreeable conditions to locate natural gas production in the Nanticoke area.
“In the wake of the pre-election cancellation of the Mississauga natural gas plant proposal I again note the history and culture of the Nanticoke area in creating suitable conditions for a willing and able host in Haldimand County, “ wrote Barrett. “Due to the ability to tap into abundant underground natural gas resources, we have developed a well-established and well-managed network of private natural gas wells locally dating back to the 1840’s. This history has built both experience and understanding of the issues surrounding natural gas – creating a culture amenable to natural gas energy generation as opposed to the opposition experienced in the Oakville and Mississauga areas.”
Barrett also cited the proposed natural gas pipeline to Nanticoke, and the imminent McGuinty coal closure deadline, as further evidence of the suitability for the natural gas energy production slated – but supposedly cancelled during the election – for Mississauga to be rerouted to Nanticoke.
Just yesterday Ontario Opposition Energy Critic Vic Fedeli called on Dalton McGuinty to immediately tear down the Mississauga plant, where construction continues despite election promises 55 days ago to scrap it.
