Barrett queries Ontario government on U.S. Steel Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Oct. 20, 2015

QUEEN’S PARK – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett sounded the alarm about the immediate threat of pension and benefit losses facing U.S. Steel Canada pensioners. After hearing from a number of constituents at the Norfolk County Fair, Barrett raised this during Question Period in the Ontario Legislature this morning.

“This government has announced a $3-million transitional health benefit fund – however, across Haldimand-Norfolk, Hamilton, Niagara we now have 20,000 vulnerable retirees who are struggling with the grim reality that over the years they were asked to take pensions and pension increases in place of wage increases.

Barrett asked, “Apart from supporting U.S. Steel Canada’s restructuring process, and apart from this transition fund, what specifically will this government be offering to pensioners at U.S. Steel Canada?”

In his answer, Finance Minister Charles Sousa threw the blame at the federal government for not releasing the agreement.
