Barrett supports Transparency in Gas Pricing Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 6, 2017

SIMCOE – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett is supporting his colleague Monte McNaughton’s bill that will require natural gas distributors to show the amount of the cap and trade tax on consumer bills.

McNaughton brought forward the private member’s bill last week after he heard from stakeholders and ratepayers that they want a separate line, showing how much they are paying. With cap and trade being complex and difficult to understand, McNaughton wants to see this basic level of transparency.

“Any new tax, like cap and trade, should be listed on the bill,” said Barrett. “What does the government have to hide?”

Quebec and British Columbia already have a separate line on their province’s natural gas bills. In addition, an Ontario Auditor General’s survey found 89 per cent of respondents thought it important to disclose the impact of cap and trade. The Ontario Energy Board heard 75 or 80 stakeholder groups also want to see a break-down.
