Ontario’s long-term economy forecast is dismal: Barrett

(Queen’s Park) – Ontario’s Long-Term Report on the Economy is additional proof the McGuinty-Wynne government has no plan to create jobs or balance the budget, Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett has charged.

And, the future growth projections presented in the forecast were foretold in the Drummond Report two-and-a-half years ago. “From 2015 through 2018, we expect average real GDP growth of only two per cent per year,” Drummond wrote. Indeed, today’s report shows Ontario’s growth is expected to continue to lag behind the rest of Canada for the next 20 years.

“Finance minister Sousa predicts a balanced budget by 2017-18, in spite of his own hand-picked economist, Don Drummond, forecasting we will be $30.2 billion in the hole” Barrett said.

“Ontario is in trouble – both fiscally and economically.”

“This report was originally due by law on October 6th, 2013, but the Liberals delayed it until now to use it to justify more government spending and big new pension programs,” said Opposition Finance Critic Vic Fedeli.
