Status quo with enhanced supervision – MPP Barrett wades in on Young Canada Day debate

SIMCOE – With or without the Grand Erie District School Board’s blessing, students will still attend Young Canada Day.

That’s the thought from local MPP Toby Barrett who said there is such a tradition associated with the opening day of the fair that parents will allow their child(ren) to attend regardless.

“The board may as well sanction the event and make it as safe as possible with maximum supervision — the alternative is thousands of kids attending while teachers sit in empty classrooms,” Barrett said. “This is definitely something to fight for.”

Barrett went on to say that Young Canada Day has long provided a unique opportunity for students across the County to come together and display their school colours and most importantly their school spirit and pride. “There are not too many places you can go where you’d see such an incredibly positive school event with so many young people.”

Over the past several years the Ontario government has launched local agricultural and food awareness initiatives, as well as agri-food literacy programs – much of which promote local food and all of which have received all-party support. Barrett believes there’s no better way to expose thousands of students to the hands-on opportunities and products of farming and agri-food than at the Norfolk County Fair.
