Barrett uses local example to highlight out-of-control electricity prices

QUEEN’S PARK – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP used a local example in the Legislature yesterday to highlight how electricity costs are out of control in Ontario.

Haldimand County resident Walter Mueller Jr. is one of those who “does everything right” when it comes to energy conservation in his home. He has installed energy efficient appliances, lighting, new heating and air-conditioning, has an on-demand water heater and is never home during on-peak hours. However, he gets a monthly hydro bill of over $400.

Barrett also raised the example of Mueller’s business.

“Mr. Mueller’s family business – Springer Meats – pays $40 grand a month for electricity. Last year it was $30, 000 (per month). No increase in sales, but a 30% increase in expenses. Will the premier explain to this house — how can people stay in business, or establish businesses, with 30% annual hydro hikes?”

Barrett has launched a petition about electricity prices. It will be at local events and on his web site at https://tobybarrett.com/electricity-poverty/
