MNR funding flows for challenges with leaking wells

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 25, 2019

QUEEN’S PARK – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett is hopeful money provided by the province will assist in finding a solution to gas well problems locally, and across the province.

The $500,000 in funding was transferred to Norfolk County to assist in identifying potential mitigation strategies, increase monitoring and identify future research needs to assist with a gas well on county property on Forestry Farm Road.

“As Norfolk County has been actively engaged in how to address leaking gas wells, the Province of Ontario is providing assistance for Norfolk County to support mitigation and monitoring opportunities,” Barrett said. “Although there isn’t a solution yet, I am confident this funding has helped us move closer to finding one. Norfolk County has been a valuable partner in this work.”

The knowledge gained will be valuable if there are similar problems in the province in the future.

There are more than 25,000 petroleum wells across Southwestern Ontario and 7,800 in Haldimand and Norfolk. Under the Oil, Gas and Salt Resource Act, it’s the responsibility of private land owners to deal with any issues associated with gas wells on their property.
