We’re demanding a 2 per cent cut” – Barrett
Simcoe – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett says the Ontario track record on continued spending increases must be stopped.
“After eight years of wasteful spending sprees we are literally drowning in red ink,” Barrett intoned. “This ship is sinking and we need to begin bailing and plugging the holes before we hit rock bottom.”
Opposition Leader Tim Hudak is calling on McGuinty for 2 per cent annual spending cuts in every area except health care and education.
Hudak met Monday with economist Don Drummond, Chair of the Commission on the Reform of Ontario’s Public Services, to discuss ideas on reining in government spending in Ontario. Hudak has also requested a meeting with senior Ministry of Finance officials to find out the true size of Ontario’s deficit.
Mr. Drummond is due to deliver his report in January for consideration in next year’s budget process.
“We all look forward to Mr. Drummond’s report, but Ontario can’t afford to wait to get wasteful spending under control,” concluded Barrett.
