Stay on time – and fraud free – in 2011

For Immediate Release:
January 4, 2011

Simcoe – MPP Toby Barrett is asking residents to stop by his office and pick up a Smart ConsumerCalendar to ensure that 2011 doesn’t get off on the wrong foot.

Barrett says the calendars from the Ministry of Consumer Services provide a handful of useful tips and information on how to avoid the pitfalls of consumer fraud.

“Given the difficult economic times it is more essential than ever that we take steps to protect ourselves from those looking to make a quick buck,” stated Barrett. “An Ontario Securities Commission forum we held in 2009 indicated 1 in 20 Canadians become fraud victims – with a little forewarning perhaps we can whittle those numbers down.”

The packages include information on everything from charitable donations, energy contracts, and auto insurance changes, to dealing with telemarketers, and knowing your consumer rights.

Anyone interested in picking up a Smart Consumer Calendar, can contact Barrett’s office at: 519-428-0446, 905-765-8413, 1-800-903-8629.
