QUEEN’S PARK – Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett extended congratulations to Norfolk farmers Bryan and Cathy Gilvesy for receiving the Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence Leaders in Innovation Awards.

“The Gilvesys have long been leaders in the farming community, and in particular in sustainable farming,” Barrett said. “Bryan has been involved in the ALUS program and has been one of the drivers in taking the program’s Ontario pilot – which Norfolk was – to the next level.”

Previously Gilvesy won the 2008 Canadian Agri-Food Award of Excellence for Environmental Stewardship, received the 2007 Premier’s Award for Ag Innovation and many other honours.

“Like many farmers in Norfolk County, we had to find life after tobacco” Gilvesy said. “Unsure of the future, we were certain of only one thing – that this time we would control our own destiny through development of our own brand.”

Last year, Norfolk County’s Burning Kiln Winery received the Minister’s Award in the program.

“I’ve long said area farmers are leaders in innovation and this award is just another affirmation of that fact,” Barrett said.
